Polish Geothermal
Energy, health, and recreation from the heart of the Earth

Uniejów is a unique place on the map of Poland - since the 90s it has been using natural geothermal resources to heat buildings, support recreation, and develop tourism. Thanks to geothermal, the city has become one of the country's most important centers of green energy and spa thermal services.

Natural wealth - hot geothermal waters

The first information about geothermal resources under Uniejów dates back to the late 70s, when during exploratory research, hot water deposits were discovered at a depth of about 1.9 – 2.25 km below the surface.

These waters reach a temperature of about 68 °C, and their mineralization reaches about 6–8 g/l, making them a valuable raw material for heating, recreational, and therapeutic purposes.

Heating system and technology

Geotermia Uniejów relies on a two-well doublet type system - consisting of:

  • production well (PIG/AGH-2) approx. 2031 m deep, from which hot water is taken;
  • injection well (PIG/AGH-1) approx. 2065 m deep, into which cooled water is reinjected after heat recovery.

Additionally, there is a reserve well IGH-1 used in case of necessary technical work or maintenance.

Thanks to this system, geothermal water can be exploited continuously and sustainably, and its heat transferred to the municipal heating network without excessive burden on resources.

How geothermal is used in Uniejów

Uniejów Geothermal is not just apartment heating - it is a comprehensive system of cascaded hot water use, which includes:

  1. Network heat production - geothermal energy provides heating and domestic hot water to private houses, public buildings, tourist centers, hotels, and other facilities. The network covers over a dozen kilometers of installation, and the system supplies heat to most buildings in the city.
  2. Balneotherapy and recreation - after releasing thermal energy, water is still warm (approx. 50 °C) and goes to therapeutic facilities and pools in the Termy Uniejów complex. Rehabilitation and recreational baths take place here in water at approx. 35 °C, also used to heat the pitch turf.
  3. Other local applications - geothermal water is used to heat sports field surfaces and can serve to heat sidewalks in parks, increasing residents' comfort.
Benefits for environment and residents

The Geotermia Uniejów installation brings tangible ecological benefits:

  • Reduction of pollutant emissions – geothermal and biomass heating replaces traditional fossil fuel-based sources, significantly reducing CO₂, NOₓ, SO₂, and dust emissions.
  • Effective natural resource use – thanks to the doublet system and reinjection of cooled water, underground resources are exploited sustainably and safely.
  • Development of thermal and health tourism – geothermal thermal sources attract tourists, support the local economy, and raise residents' quality of life.

Summary

Uniejów Geothermal is an example of successful energy transformation, in which natural energy from the earth's interior was used not only to heat buildings but also to build a thermal health resort and develop a recreational offer. The project shows how geothermal can harmoniously combine ecological, social, and economic benefits - bringing benefits to both residents and visitors.
