Did you know…

Stargard

breathes healthier air?

For over a decade, 3,000 large coal wagons never rolled into Stargard.

More than 170,000 tonnes of coal were never burned in PEC’s boilers.

Many other toxic substances never rose over the city either.

Heat from underground instead of smoke from chimneys. Few cities in the world are that lucky.

Stargard Geothermal

Get the facts.

Pollution Stargard has avoided thanks to geothermal energy

Data collected since 2012 shows how much pollution never reached the air above Stargard thanks to geothermal energy. Heat from deep underground has replaced a large share of the coal burned in the city, cutting the emissions responsible for smog and acid rain. The charts below show this year by year.

Avoided CO₂ emissions from 2012 to 2025
Carbon dioxide (CO₂): The main greenhouse gas, its reduction directly inhibits the process of global warming. Unlike the burning of fossil fuels, the process of extracting heat from the Earth's interior is almost emission-free.
Avoided NOx emissions from 2012 to 2025
Nitrogen oxides (NOx): They are responsible for the formation of photochemical smog and respiratory irritation. By eliminating high-temperature combustion processes, geothermal effectively prevents them from entering the atmosphere.
Avoided SO₂ emissions from 2012 to 2025
Sulfur dioxide (SO₂): It is the main cause of the formation of acid rain, which destroys forest ecosystems and acidifies the soil. Replacing coal with geothermal makes it possible to almost completely eliminate this problem in the local environment.
Avoided dust emissions from 2012 to 2025
Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10): Key components of smog that penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Our technology, without generating any dust at the site of operation, really improves the quality of the air that residents breathe every day.

Air other cities envy

Burning coal produces more than heat – it also produces everything that comes out of the chimneys: carbon dioxide and particulate matter, which penetrates deep into the lungs and harms health. The two figures on the cards show how much of it has not entered the air above Stargard since 2012.

Stargard has something most of the country lacks – a treasure hidden nearly 3 km underground. Many cities are only just planning boreholes, need huge investment and face long years of preparation. Here, geothermal energy already works today – no experiments, no promises – and heats most of the city without burning anything.

Geothermal in Stargard

Stargard – even more reasons to be proud…

Stargard is bigger in geothermal than you might think. Explore up-to-date data on the heat produced beneath the city, the costs and emissions it saves residents, and where Stargard's geothermal plant ranks in Poland and in Europe. The numbers speak for themselves.
Miniatura Mapy Zasobów Geotermalnych
An interactive map of Poland's geothermal potential at a depth of 2,000 m below ground level. A unique visualisation (a so-called “heat map”) built from dynamic hexagonal cells with a radius of approx. 3 km. The map features many significant installations and examples of geothermal technology in use across the country.
Stargard's heat comes from two producers and reaches homes through a single network. See how much it costs to produce heat from geothermal energy versus coal, and what share of the bill goes to distribution. The actual figures show what residents pay for, and to whom.
